The Ins and Outs of Nonprofit Leadership Transitions

With Moderator Amanda Ziebell of Propel Nonprofits and Panelists: Alicia Crudup of Kids ‘N Kinship, Tracy McMillan of BroadView Talent Partners, Scott Marquardt of Southwest Initiative Foundation, Melissa Martinez-Sones of Mighty Consulting, and Nonoko Sato of Minnesota Council of Nonprofits

Nonprofit leadership transitions can happen at any time for reasons both planned and not. Recently, we’ve gotten a crash course as many nonprofit executive directors are reaching retirement age, emerging leaders are responding to crises and change in their communities, and the pandemic and economic recovery have affected the sector.

This panel of leaders will share perspectives on ways to prepare for and navigate leadership transitions that focus on the financial health and sustainability of nonprofit organizations.

They’ll talk about how transitions don’t begin the day the job description is posted, and end when the new Executive Director accepts the job. From financial planning, leadership development of staff, and board readiness, to crafting an internal and external communication strategy, and engaging a variety of partners, leadership transitions offer a variety of opportunities for an organization.
