Join this session to hear and share insights and learn from other leaders on how to effectively engage the Board of Directors in their role as fiscal stewards of the organization.  Like it or not, the nonprofit model has the Board, not the Executive Director, as legally responsible for the financial health of the organization – but they often are not clear on their role or able to fulfill their fiduciary duties.  In this session we will share some of our insights, and learn from others in the room, the tips and tricks to educate, inform and support a Board of Directors to live into their financial roles.

Speaker Information

Melissa Martinez-Sones started consulting in 2014 and has helped define the spirit of our brand with her passion for community and skill at moving clients and projects forward.

Melissa brings a wealth of leadership, facilitation and project management experience from her work with neighborhood organizations in both Minneapolis and Saint Paul. She’s been an Executive Director for two neighborhood organizations, worked as a Councilmember’s Aide, developed internal policy for the City of Minneapolis, and worked on several complex projects involving a wide variety of elected officials, constituents, and community partners. She focuses on working with all stakeholders to achieve solutions to challenging issues.

Melissa has a Bachelor’s degree in Urban Studies and Sociology from Hamline University, and a Master’s of Public Affairs from the Humphrey School at the University of Minnesota where she received the Thomas H. Swain Fellowship in Public Leadership.

Since 1993, Roger Meyer has worked with nonprofit and government organizations through important and often difficult transitions. From taking the reins of small neighborhood nonprofits to providing interim CEO work for Volunteers of America, his work is infused with insights and knowledge gleaned from working with organizations as they grapple with internal and external change.

Through a facilitative leadership style, he builds consensus and keeps organizations and partnerships moving through difficult issues – supporting them through transition and leaving them stronger and more focused on the other side. He brings optimism, energy and fresh ideas to his work – and brings out the same in others.

Roger has a B.A. in Speech Communication from the University of Minnesota, has received a fellowship to study community involvement across the United States, and has received recognition for his work to improve his St. Paul neighborhood. He has served on several nonprofit and community boards. His three children remind him daily of his obligation to maintain and improve his community.

Roger, Melissa, and the Mighty Consulting Team provide Interim Executive Director and Board Development to nonprofit organizations by delivering practical, no-nonsense solutions to the challenges faced by executive directors and boards in today’s difficult environment. Mighty has served 100’s of organizations and learned the tips and tricks to building a better Board-E.D. partnership. Join this session and leave with ideas on how to build and sustain clear expectations and understanding on the Board of Directors to perform their critical, and too often overlooked, financial oversight role.
