Donor stewardship is more than just saying “thank you” and sharing how your nonprofit is delivering on mission. Donor stewardship is making sure you are providing your donors with accurate and timely documentation of their contributions. The IRS has specific rules and regulations that must be followed. Failure to meet these expectations can result in penalties that range from financial to losing your 501(c)(3) charitable status. What happens when you receive a qualified charitable distribution? Who’s the legal donor when you receive a grant from a donor advised fund? How do you receipt a gift of stock? In this interactive session, participants will gain the knowledge and resources you need to record, receipt, and acknowledge gifts that steward your donors while not running afoul of the IRS.

Learning objectives:

  • Develop fundraising and stewardship plans that encourage engagement and giving while adhering to IRS guidelines
  • Leave with the foundation of IRS requirements for gift acknowledgement and substantiation.
  • Gain the knowledge and confidence of when they must decline a gift or stewardship request
  • Know where to find resources to support their gift acknowledgement and stewardship policies
